Our Chapter History

We are elated to achieve 75 years of strong brotherhood and immense impact in the Macon community! As the 213th chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, we were founded in 1949 by nine men: Alonzo Mills Boddie, William Duval, Charles H. Hutchings, III, Frank J. Hutchings, Sr., William S. Hutchings, II, Willie H. Odom, Jr., Cassander Sellers, Willis B. Sheftall, and Robert J. Williams. Because of their trailblazing efforts we are still standing today!

Our Impact

Over the last 75 years we have invested our time and treasure into the Macon community to help progress the lives of each citizen. Our longstanding presence and impact on the community can be traced to three key efforts: the Debutante Cotillion Scholarship Fundraiser, the Educational Talent Search, and Alpha Elites, now known as Alpha Esquires.

The Cotillion was established in 1959 as a mechanism for Blacks in Macon to develop young ladies and present them to society. To date, over $750,000 have been raised, benefitting the academic and professional pursuits of more than 500 women who, in turn, have positively impacted the local community and the world at large.

Founded in 1978, the Educational Talent Search has equipped first-generation college students for their chosen trajectory through ACT/SAT preparation, entrance counseling, FAFSA assistance, and immersion through tours and extended colloquia. Through the effective and responsible stewardship of federal grant funds–totaling well over $5 million, we have mobilized over 34,000 first-generation college students toward their excellent destinies.

For more than 20 years, the chapter has mentored high school-aged males, aligned with our fraternity’s commitment to the “better making of men.” Alpha Esquires are provided with postsecondary education awareness, life skills training, and immersion into the local and surrounding cultures. Presently, we have an exclusive partnership with Southwest High School, through which we are serving young men at the freshman, sophomore, and junior level
